History

Brittany Hendrix-Smith graduated from UC Santa Barbara in only three years with degrees in both Law & Society and Philosophy, with an emphasis in ethics and public policy.

In 2011, Brittany received her Juris Doctorate from Chapman University School of Law.  She was a member of the Public Interest Law Foundation, as well as the Constitutional Law Society. In addition to the standard curriculum, Brittany also took classes in Critical Race Theory and Prisoner Rights.  In her last year of law school, Brittany received the “Commitment to Service in Public Interest” award.

After law school, Brittany assisted low-income individuals facing legal difficulties related to housing, family, immigration, health care, and public benefits.  Brittany also worked for the Prison Litigation Project in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ Office of the Circuit Executive. During her time at the Ninth Circuit, she drafted self-help documents for inmate litigants hoping to file judicial complaints. Brittany worked with the Ninth Circuit’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and researched the best ways to implement conflict resolution programs in California prisons.  Brittany also assisted in planning the first ever Prison Litigation Conference, which was held in November 2015.

Throughout her career, Brittany has maintained a passion for education.  She has taught classes in multiple California jails and prisons. In 2013, Brittany developed curriculum for the first ever college-level human rights course for inmates at California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, CA. She has since taught this course in several different penal institutions throughout California.

In 2015, Brittany founded the Law Offices of Brittany Hendrix-Smith, and began practicing exclusively in criminal defense and family law.  Both of these areas utilized Brittany’s strengths – getting to know clients on an individual basis, and fighting with them towards their specific goals.  She feels extremely lucky to have such a rewarding job.

Brittany is a proud member of several organizations, including the California Bar Association, the Contra Costa County Bar Association, and California Women Lawyers.
